1911
The first Canadian government census available for Biggar is the 1911 Census. This census has been indexed by Automated Genealogy and the Biggar Branch Saskatchewan Genealogical Society.

Prior to Biggar becoming a Town the next census available for this area is the 1906 Census for Saskatchewan. This census too has been indexed by Automated Genealogy and the original records are available online at the Library and Archives Canada website.


1901
Prior to Saskatchewan becoming a province the next census available for this area is the 1901 Census. This census is searchable by surname as well at Automated Genealogy and original images are available for viewing on the Library and Archives Canada website.


1891
The 1891 Census is also available only on microfilm and not online. The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society Regina Branch has indexed this census and have published four books so far for the Territories.

  • Condon, Eileen, editor, Index to the 1891 Census District of Saskatchewan, 1992;
  • Condon, Eileen P., editor, Index to the 1891 Census Assiniboia East, 1990;
  • Condon, Eileen P.editor, Index to the 1891 Census Assiniboia West, 1988 ;
  • Condon, Eileen P. Index to the 1891 Census District of Alberta, 1998

and the Regina Branch is working on the fifth volume.

If you are looking for people in the Biggar area in 1891, you will need to search the District of Saskatchewan and Assiniboia West. The boundary between the two districts runs through the Biggar area.

Some genealogical societies have copies of the 1891 Census microfilm, Provincial Archives also have copies and some public libraries also have copies.


1881
The 1881 Census for the North West Territories has been indexed by FamilySearch and is available online at: http://www.familysearch.org/

Click onto "Advanced Search" and then select "Census" the choose "1881 Canadian Census".

The Biggar Branch also has some Census Indexes to the censuses taken by the Town of Biggar. These are listed in our library catalgoue.
